Amen Trust organise Womens’ Empowerment Groups in surrounding villages. Village women are given access to sewing machines and receive training in tailoring/dressmaking with a view to enabling them to start small businesses.

This type of program is popular in India and is in much demand.  Women’s work tends to be labouring work in the fields, on building sites, or as domestic servants.  Hours are long and wages very low.  Women who are worst affected are rural women with children who are divorced or who’s husband have left them. Employers tend to expect children to work along side their mothers.

Dressmaking and tailoring is a skill that allows women to earn a living at home. If successful it also allows them to look after their children properly and send them to school.

A group session in a village will cost about £50 including van hire.
