New slates – a village school in West Godavari District (2011)
Amen Trust supplies badly needed educational resources to pupils of Government village primary schools at a cost of about £50 per school. Although the A.P. State Government provide quite good school buildings and pay for full time professional teachers, the children’s writing materials and uniforms must be provided by parents. An exercise book can cost almost a days wage for an agricultural labourer. Many children attend school without basic writing material. In some villages poverty is to such a degree that schools operate a feeding program for pupils. There are over 30 village schools in need of additional support in this area.
