Who we are
Scripture Union Ministries Trust (SUMT) was established over twenty years ago as a local Trust on the Isle of Man.  It is an associate Trust to Scripture Union England and Wales.  SUMT connects in with local churches, primary and secondary education and a gap year programme for emerging leaders.  We believe that all human beings are of equal worth in the sight of God and aim to follow Biblical principles in all that we do.

Our SUMT team is made of up to ten volunteers, two interns and four staff members all trained, taught, equipped, resourced and mentored to make a difference to the world, wherever they find themselves - on the Isle of Man and beyond.

Our aims

  • To encourage, equip and inspire young people through credible witness, Bible-based teaching, and relationship
  • To provide a quality Christian resource to both the education system on the Island, and the Church
  • To serve the local church through resources and training
  • To assist the church in raising up a new generation of leaders

The work we do
Schools:
SUMT have been a part of secondary school life and further education life on the Isle of Man for over twenty years.  But now our work reaches further and we are able to engage with all Secondary schools, over thirty five Primary schools, and a college of Further and Higher Education.

We work at many different levels.  From speaking to more than 1,000 young people at a time in school assemblies using creative and relevant means through to residential weekends, ‘Weekends Away’, for secondary age young people on a Christian faith journey, training and discipleship and the mentoring of young leaders on an individual basis. We work with youth and children’s workers on the Island and have trained committed teachers on the SUMT team who teach curriculum based lessons, develop resource packs for schools to use which link them with local churches, and take RE lessons or lessons in Personal, Social, Health and Emotional Education.

Schools Groups:  SUMT are involved with several Christian Union groups around the island's schools when invited. We work to encourage young people in their faith journey and to give an opportunity for those wanting to explore faith. Most of the clubs we are involved with are led by pupils and supported by SUMT.  We also run 'Just Looking' groups which are for those who are ‘just looking' into the whole idea of faith, spirituality or Christianity.

Gap Year:  A year of opportunity, a year of personal development as well as a year of service.  A fully funded year in partnership with local churches.  Housed in our twenty two bedroom team house in Port St Mary our students develop in their leadership, with informal teaching as well as formal training including courses in first aid, food hygiene, risk assessment, conflict resolution, schools work, a course for emerging leaders and a course of the students own choice all with a mentor and pastoral support.  This years team of seven are incredible individuals who are working alongside our two interns and our three paid workers. They have the potential to do astounding work in schools, churches and the community across the Isle of Man. This is our largest team yet partnering with twelve local churches to help repurpose existing work with children or young people or help launch brand new initiatives for children and/or youth.

Churches:  There are over one hundred churches on the Isle of Man and SUMT has the incredible privilege of working with around 90% of them - churches of all shapes, sizes and denominations.  We hold resource Roadshows, training events, one-off services and sessions with children and young people.  We partner specific churches through our Gap Year programme.

Resources:  You can access our resources for reference or loan.  If you are interested in using our team as a free resource for your school lessons please get in touch with us on 01624 836048 or email us on [email protected]

How you can help
We are so amazed at how God brings the right people in to the SUMT world at just the right time - sometimes to pray, sometimes to give practical or skill based support and at other times to give financially.  To find out more about us and the work we do please contact us on 01624 836048.

By making a donation: If you would like to support the work of SUMT a donation can be made.
