Who we are
The Manx Diabetic Group has been in existence since 1986. We are affiliated to Diabetes UK but, being a Manx organisation, we are an independent entity in our own right. This means that nearly all the money we raise in the Isle of Man is used for the benefit of Manx diabetics. Money which goes off-island is that raised by the group for research; that is, money specifically donated for research purposes. The group occasionally helps out with funds for special research projects.
Our aims and objectives
We have, and will continue, to press for the right of all diabetics in the Isle of Man to receive the best possible care necessary to help them maintain good control of their condition and to be able to live a fulfilling life.
The work we do
We provide a support group for all diabetics and their families in the Isle of Man.
In order to encourage and sustain our aim to improve diabetes services, we:
- Buy equipment for the Diabetes Centre and other Hospital Departments directly concerned with Diabetes
- Provide support for the Paediatric Ward
- Fund children's educational holidays and outings
- Purchase and distribute diabetes leaflets and books free to the Diabetes Centre, Paediatric Ward, GP's surgeries and schools
- Lobby to alter legislation which discriminates against diabetics
- Raise awareness and funds for diabetes research
- Provide funding for hospital staff training courses
To date, since the Diabetes Centre opened at the ‘new’ Noble’s Hospital, the Group has purchased the following equipment - seven 24 hour blood pressure monitors, three continuous monitors, a computerised digital fundus eye camera and slit lamp, three computer review stations (one being for Ramsey Cottage Hospital).
We were also able to direct donations towards an Argon laser machine for the Eye Clinic.
Nearly all the money we raise in the Isle of Man is used for the benefit of Manx diabetics.
In order to promote management and research, the Manx Diabetic Group occasionally provides funding for special research projects in the UK.
