Who we are
School for Uganda was set up in 2006. It was founded by a group of five individuals who share a passion...to bring hope to the lives of children living without it in Uganda.
Our aims
It was our initial intention to raise funds to facilitate the purchase of five acres of land, on which to build a vocational secondary school boarding block, staff accommodation and working farm. Here the children of Good Hope Primary School, Namungoona, Uganda have the opportunity to continue their education. The first contact with Good Hope School was made through a pen-friend and schools linking project, at Foxdale Primary School in the Isle of Man.
The work we do
By August 2007 (just ten months after the charity was formed), we had raised almost £13,000. As a result, we were able to purchase five acres of land just outside Kampala.
We raised this money through sponsored events, raffles, donations, workshops, presentations, talks and bag packs. We also held a ‘Forwards in Friendship’ art exhibition of Manx and Ugandan children’s art work at the Villa Marina. This included a ‘closed bid’ sale of works donated by local Manx artists.
We are delighted to recognise the interest, concern and efforts of so many individuals, as well as the Manx media, in helping to raise the awareness of our work. We facilitate friendship across the world and encourage knowledge and understanding of each other’s cultures and countries.
It is intended that the buildings will utilise solar generation, UV water filtration, composting toilets and a water pump. We aim to make it a self-sustainable and environmentally friendly establishment. Our 2009 goal is to build a four classroom block, a toilet block and a kitchen block. In order to achieve this we need to raise £35,000.
If we can do this, we will be able to open the school. It will then become easier to add facilities and further classrooms in the future as the school roll grows.
Update - During 2009 we have:
Presented architect plans to the Ugandan government departments for approval - duly granted for the entire site.
Engaged and paid for a project manager to liaise with builders and report to the Charity.
Engaged and paid for a firm to produce a hydrological survey to identify an appropriate site for a bore hole.
Paid for the digging of the bore hole to completion with the pump head.
Paid for the construction of a four classroom block, small office, toilet and kitchen blocks.
Farmed the remainder of the site to produce food for the children and community.
Our aims for 2010 - to raise sufficient funds in order to:
Equip the classrooms and develop the farm.
Sponsor a teacher’s salary.
Build a four classroom block and accommodation block.
