Who we are
Robert Owen House offers hotel style accommodation for relatives or carers of patients undergoing life saving treatment at the Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital. Robert Owen House is situated within the grounds of the Broad Green Campus and only a short walk from all the main wards. Isle of Man residents benefit from this facility enabling them to be near their loved ones during very stressful times.

Friends of Robert Owen House is a registered Manx Charity whose main aims are:

  • To support the work of the Robert Owen House Trust in providing accommodation for relatives/carers of patients who find themselves in one of Britain’s top ‘Hospitals of Excellence’
  • To provide help and support to patients and relatives following their return to the Island

A Safe Haven In Time Of Need
The overnight accommodation at Robert Owen House avoids the need for a family member/career to seek hotel or B&B accommodation in Liverpool, with all the associated problems of public transport and personal security that goes with large cities. The facility also gives peace of mind to the patient knowing that a loving face is there when needed. Robert Owen House operates on a type of B&B basis. It comprises 17 comfortable twin en-suite bedrooms with a fully equipped kitchen enabling residents to cook their own food and a laundry for personal use.

Island Asset
Every year there are over 1000 hospital appointments involving residents from the Isle of Man for treatments such as fitting pacemakers, new valves, grafts, by-pass procedures, and surgery for heart, lung and chest problems. In a full year over 50% of the available bed nights are occupied by residents of our Island. Considering that the population of the hospitals catchment area is some 3million people, taking in North Wales, Cheshire, Merseyside and Lancashire, the Isle of Man, with a population of about 80,000, does extremely well with its take-up of bed nights.

How you can help

Robert Owen House has to raise its own funds to enable this important facility to continue. It does not receive any money from the NHS or from any Government Department. It survives on modest nightly charges, legacies and fund raising. The Friends of Robert Owen House, based here on the Island, have raised over £180,000 in the past 5 years and need to continue raising money year after year.

We have an annual target of £25,000, which we like to think of as the Island’s way of saying ‘Thank you’ to everyone involved with the operation of Robert Owen House and for the way they look after our Island people during very distressful times.

Every single contribution makes a difference and there are several ways you can help us.
