About us
The Manx Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (MSPCA) is a non-profit Isle of Man animal welfare organisation. The MSPCA was established 1897 as a Manx charity to help injured, stray and unwanted animals. We provide compassion and empathy, professional rescue, sanctuary, re-homing, investigation and education services on behalf of all animals.

The present purpose-built Ard Jerkyll sanctuary facility in East Foxdale was opened in July 1996. The construction of the facility was largely subsidised by donations from the Scholl Foundation. It costs more than £1,000 a day to operate the MSPCA and maintain its facilities which include kennels, a cattery, a small animal unit, an aviary and a specialist unit for seals. The sanctuary cares for more than 1,500 animals a year.

The MSPCA receives no Government funding and relies entirely on donations, legacies and Member’s subscriptions. The Society is continually in need of money to fund new sanctuary facilities in order to keep pace with the demand for its service.

The work we do

Adopt a pet
Dogs and cats and all pets are living beings who require lots of time, money and commitment. Sharing your life with a companion animal can bring incredible rewards for both you and the animal. If you decide to adopt a pet from the MSPCA we do ask that you consider the implications of owning a pet very carefully. We can help you by arranging a home visit by a MSPCA representative to talk it over.

Dealing with cruelty/neglect
Each of us has the ability to make a meaningful difference in the lives of neglected and abused animals. By reporting cases of suspected or known animal cruelty / neglect, you are offering defenceless animals protection and a second chance. You may also be helping other current and future victims. In a typical year, the MSPCA receives and collects some 1,200 animals and deals with 200 animal welfare complaints. Animal rescues are a major part of the Society's work. Injured birds, stranded seals, abandoned dogs and helpless cats are examples. If you suspect cruelty / neglect please call or email us - we may be able to help.

Boarding kennels
The MSPCA has spacious modern facilities for boarding dogs at reasonable rates. Individual dog pens have underground heating and the Society provides all bedding, food and toys. All medical needs are catered for, and dogs are walked a number of times daily. The facilities are truly a home away from home. Owners are encouraged to visit the sanctuary before boarding their dog. Proof of full vaccination is required. Please note that the MSPCA does not board cats.

Ard Jerkyll Tearooms
The Ard Jerkyll Tearooms are open from 11.00am to 5.00pm daily except Mondays and Tuesdays. The Tearooms serve a varied menu including daily specials and roast luncheons on Saturdays and Sundays. Bring along the whole family for a great day out - enjoy eating delicious food and visiting the sanctuary.

How you can help us
It costs more than £1,000 a day to run the MSPCA. To finance this cost 365 days a year, plus the cost of improving the sanctuary's facilities, we rely totally on donations, legacies and Member's annual subscriptions.

All donations, large and small are gratefully acknowledged. You can commit to a monthly donation by way of a standing order. Or you can take out a life insurance policy paying the annual premiums and naming the MSPCA as the sole beneficiary upon your death.

Leaving money to the MSPCA in your will is another way to support the Society's work. Legacy information is available in the Society's 'Will Power' leaflet available on request.

You can also donate directly to the MSPCA using the PayPal donate button.

We are always looking for new members. This is an opportunity to volunteer your time for dog walking, cat socialising, gardening, property maintenance and other requirements around the sanctuary.

Opening hours
The Sanctuary is open 8.00am to 5.00pm daily. Public viewing of the animals is from 1.00pm to 4.00pm daily except Tuesdays.
