Who are we
Caarjyn ny Gaelgey (Friends of the Manx Language) was established in 1991. The founder set up a working party and all sections of the Manx Gaelic speaking community were asked to make representations to the working party. Caarjyn ny Gaelgey was established as a result of that working party.
Caarjyn ny Gaelgey is a totally independent organisation and exists to represent the interests and promotion of the Manx language for future generations.
Our Aim
The aim of the organisation is to provide opportunities for people to learn and use the Manx language.
The work we do
- Language classes: Classes are kept small and informal and each person can learn at his/her own pace in a friendly atmosphere. Evening classes for adults, from beginners to advanced, are held at our headquarters in St. John’s from 7.30pm to 9.30pm. Some classes are grammar based but all include and encourage conversation. We make a small charge each evening and tea/coffee is provided.
- Coffee mornings: We hold regular coffee mornings on the first Saturday of each month at St.John’s House. These provide opportunities for informal conversation on everyday topics between friends and fellow students and an opportunity to meet other Manx speakers. Visitors who just want to hear the language being spoken will always be welcome on these mornings.
- Weekend courses: These weekends, some residential, provide a great opportunity for those who attend, to become more fully immersed in the language in an informal setting. Information about the dates and places of these weekends can be found on the Internet and are announced in the press and on the radio. These courses are open to anyone who wishes to improve their Manx.
Literary competitions
Caarjyn ny Gaelgey sponsor several literary competitions to encourage the creation of modern Manx literature. The adult competition is held biennially with a trophy being presented late summer/autumn. For senior school children, the literary award is presented every two years, with the primary school’s award being competed for annually. These competitions are open to everyone, both on and off the Island.
A small award is presented annually to a member of the language class who has made an outstanding achievement.
Caarjyn ny Gaelgey co-operates with other organisations involved with the promotion of Manx Gaelic.
