Who we are
We are a local group offering support to Manx residents who may be affected or are caring for someone affected by this commonly misunderstood illness.  It has been registered with the World Health Organisation since 1969.  We were formed in 1987 as a group (formerly under the title of M.E. (Myalgic Encephalomyelitis) Self Help Group IOM) and registered as a charity in 1988.

Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS)/myalgic encephalomyelitis (or encephalopathy) (ME) is a relatively common illness.  The physical symptoms can be as disabling as multiple sclerosis, systemic lupus erythematosus, rheumatoid arthritis, congestive heart failure and other chronic conditions.  CFS/ME places a substantial burden on people with the condition, their families and carers, and hence on society.  It is present in both adults and children.

Common symptoms are:

  • Fatigue that lasts more than 24 hours after exertion at a level that you used to be able to manage without feeling tired
  • Muscle and joint pain, but no swelling
  • Painful glands in your neck or armpits
  • A sore throat and headaches
  • Forgetfulness, memory loss, confusion, or difficulty concentrating
  • Sleep disturbances - waking up feeling tired or unrested or having trouble getting to sleep
    Flu-like symptoms
  • Palpitations (the sensation of feeling your heartbeat thumping in your chest)
  • Dizziness and nausea
  • Sweating
  • Visible muscle twitching
  • Irritable bowel syndrome symptoms such as constipation or diarrhoea and bloating

Our aim
To support people affected by ME/CFS, often people can feel isolated and left out of society and to help people understand the illness and realise they are not alone.

The work we do

  • Listen.  Surprising how much this can help
  • Share information at our monthly meetings.  The meetings are currently held at Café Relish, Duke Street, Douglas, on the second Tuesday of every month.  Please telephone 01624 613724 for times
  • Provide support for carers and family members
  • Promote understanding and awareness
