Who we are
BallaAfrica was registered as a Manx charity in June 2008 with the help of both staff and students from Ballakermeen High School, Douglas, Isle of Man.
BallaAfrica was founded by Johan Loubser. Johan worked with malnourished children in the area of Bronkhorstspruit, near Pretoria, South Africa many years ago, but the sad impressions of these children have been imprinted in his memory. When Johan arrived on the Isle of Man he started the charity, hoping to make a difference in the lives of some of these children.
A broad spectrum of people help to raise money for BallaAfrica, but by being a teacher at Ballakermeen High School, Johan also develops the personal and social skills of many young people who get involved and to raise awareness of the global problem of poverty.
Our Aim
Our long-term aim is to raise money to establish a community centre for providing food, medication, education and care to orphaned AIDS children and other poor people in the area of Pretoria West, South Africa.
The work we do
Our primary project is raising the £100,000 needed to fund the building of the Community Centre on the outskirts of Bronkhorstspruit.
The Community Centre will house volunteers who will help teach, feed and medicate Aids orphans and other needy people in Bronkhorstspruit, neighbouring suburbs and squatter camps.
In the meantime we are setting up the ‘Rubbish Dump’ project. This is a project where BallaAfrica have identified a number of families living and surviving off a rubbish dump. We aim to provide these people with a better life and provide their basic needs.
